A bit about me

Hi! My name is Emily Hughes, and I’m happy to meet you. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or LCSW, licensed to practice in the state of Texas (#108721). I provide individual therapy virtually to adults living in Texas, and am currently keeping my practice small as I maintain a full-time counseling job at an Austin nonprofit.

My journey in this work began in college as I dove into the Austin nonprofit world. Across all settings I worked in - HIV/AIDS hospice, sexual assault forensic examinations, and substance use recovery spaces - I encountered trauma and intimately saw how it impacted the lives of clients and their families. This work led me to tune into myself in a new way and turn towards my own areas of pain. As both the client and then as a provider, I experienced the transformative healing power of human connection, the mysterious alchemy of having a safe-enough, attuned other person in the room to facilitate healing. This continues to have the deepest influence on my work today!

Since graduate school, my focus has been in working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, with a sub-focus on working with Latinx/Hispanic survivors. I describe my style as warm, relational, curious, and direct.

Outside of work, some of my favorite ways to spend my time are singing, reading, working out, and spending time with my loved ones. One of my current life joys is periodically fostering cats who sometimes make an appearance during sessions! As a relational therapist, I welcome questions about who I am as a person and how I work.

The art of growth goes far beyond licenses, degrees, trainings, and textbooks. I most cherish the ways in which I continue to develop through prioritizing my own healing work, leaning into ruptures and repairs in my relationships, taking time to play and take care of myself, stumbling through boundary-setting, strengthening my trust in my own body’s signals, engaging with my spiritual practices, unlearning oppressive ideologies, and actualizing change in my communities.
